Tasting Notes

Master Medal, The Drinks Business Global Sparkling Masters. Gorgeous mouth-filling mouse with apple compote, apricot jam, honeyed toast and icing sugar dusted pastries. Bang for buck in the world of English sparkling, the Wiston Brut NV wins every time. The palate darts between fruit, toasty notes and nuts and the finish is very long and quivering with energy. The current release is based on their superb 2017 vintage (a troublesome year for many other producers,) with reserve wines dating back to 2008. Made like high quality Champagne, unhurried and with great love and care - aged for 3 years sur lattes pre release.

More Info

With its Blanc de Noirs 2010 being named Supreme Champion at the inaugural Wine GB Awards, and its Cuvée 2013 being named the UK’s Best Sparkling Wine in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2017, AND winning the English Sparkling Wine Trophy in the International Wines and Spirits Challenge 2017, life is good for Wiston Estate. It’s a testament to the combined efforts and expertise of estate managers Richard and Kirsty Goring, and winemaker Dermot Sugrue, and confirms Wiston as a genuine trailblazer of quality English sparkling wine. Taking inspiration from his previous work in Champagne, Dermot prefers to use old Jacques Prieur Burgundy barrels for fermentation and ageing of Wiston’s vintage wines and his approach to winemaking is all about patience – as such Wiston sparkling wines will only ever be released once they have reached pitch-perfect readiness. Their NV wines are unbeatable examples of just good English sparkling can be.

FROM THE PRESS

“I selected Wiston Estate to launch Britannia thanks to its impeccable quality and for its poise between modernity and tradition. Wiston stands for passion and pride as a technically masterful English sparkling wine producer since 2006 with heritage as a farming estate stretching back to 1743. But the main reason is because its bubbly is irresistibly delicious!”
Olly Smith
“The NV Brut from Wiston has been a go-to English sparkler for some time now. The bunches are pressed using a traditional Coquard basket press, and this blend comprises mainly the 2014 vintage augmented by reserves from 2009 and 2013. It has a steely, malic bouquet of dew-speckled Granny Smith apples, wet limestone and a touch of petrichor. It is almost like a Blanc de Blancs, reserved yet engaging. The palate is full of tension thanks to the driving acidity, though it is in no way a shrill sparkling wine. It is just sharp, with vivacious green apples intermixed with gooseberry and a touch of grapefruit on the finish. Excellent.”
Neal Martin, Vinous
“Fresh orchard fruit, buckets of it, but also traces of honey and brioche and pistachio bring richness and sweetness. Finishes with a scalpel-sharp etch of acidity. GV Drink now-2024”
