Mixed Case of 12 Domaine Derey

The late, great boozer, cook and and bon vivant Keith Floyd once recalled how while up to his eyeballs in fine Burgundy he came up with the idea of creating a wine-drinking board game called Vinopoly. The basic idea of this game was that you would throw the dice and when you land on a certain Burgundy appellation, you drink some of that wine. Ignoring the impracticalities of this game (Floyd freely admits he was sloshed when he came up with it), it does encourage us to think about the equivalence that might obtain between the London streets of a Monopoly board and the Burgundy appellations of Floydy's as yet unmarketed board game.

While the likes of Romanée-Conti and Richebourg might occupy the purple blocks reserved for Park Lane and Mayfair, where might Fixin and Marsannay lie? Has to be the dunnish browns of Whitechapel Road and Old Kent Road, doesn't it? But just as these somewhat edgier environs of London have been witness to pockets of gentrification over the past few years, so a number of domaines in these once also-ran appellations to the extreme north of the Côte de Nuits have upped their game in response to our rapacious appetite for fine Burgundy and now make some very classy wines.

6 x Marsannay Vieilles Vignes Les Genelieres Domaine Derey 2014

For anyone wishing to know what a textbook definition of a Marsannay Pinot Noir is like, look nay further. Marsannay is the northern most wine village in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. Formerly known only for its rosé wine, Marsannay is increasingly winning attention from Burgundy lovers in search of good quality with some semblance of everyday value. Les Genelières is a wine which smoothly blends red (morello cherry, strawberry) and black (blackcurrant, blueberry) fruit with a hint of spice and a subtle meaty savour.
