Gobsmackingly good Semillon is an almost endangered species, but here at Swig we have braved the safari of Semillon to find you this rare goody. Not only has it captured the hearts of all of the Swigees in the office, but it also has an impeccable pedigree, from the vines that are over 125 years old to the winemaking royalty that produces it.
David Franz is the incredibly talented son of Peter Lehmann, Aussie wine God and all round over-achiever. Having been determined to become a graphic designer from the age of 8 he made a u-turn in 1992 when he took up a night shift at St Hallett Wines in Barossa Valley. After time spent travelling and working at Glen Carlou in South Africa, he and his now pregnant wife Nicki returned home. What we love most about the Lehmanns is that there was no cushy managerial job for David when he got home, no, he went straight in at the bottom of the company as a vineyard hand. Fast forward several years and the insatiable David, who had begun to make his own wine in free moments, moved to a little shed and set up his one-man wine-making operation. The rest, as they say, is history - albeit a very scrumptious one!
