Ring the bell, sound the klaxon, another South African star is born!

Meet the Great SA Wine Company

This is a story Robin and Damon have been following for more than a decade, since their very first trip to everbody's favourite wine land, 'Sith Ifrica'. It was on that trip that they first tried a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc Carl made while at Quoin Rock - a winery which, largely thanks to its winemaker, developed an excellent reputation for wines from its farms in Stellenbosch and Aghulhas during the 2000s.

Carl went on to become the winemaker for DeMorgenzon, where he continues to make Platter's Guide gold-medal-winning bottlings to this day. As Saffer-philes among you will know, this is one of the most prestigious estates in Stellenbosch, owned by the fairly comfortably off (understatement) Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum.

While Carl continues to do an exemplary job making some of the finest wines in Stellenbosch for DeMorgenzon, like most talented winemakers, he has long harboured an ambition to make wines with his own personal stamp: the wines of The Great South African Wine Company.
Carl van der Merwe is neither a superstar winemaker with wings and go-faster stripes, nor a maverick making wines using an encephalograph (hi, Pieter!), but a quietly focused winemaker committed to making wines with minimal intervention (spontaneous ferments, low sulphur, no additives, no fining or filtering) and which express the best that can be expressed from the grapes he sources from the best high-lying vineyards he can find in Stellenbosch. Damon calls him a 'winemaker's winemaker', one of those people who doesn't need to shout about what he's doing or the wines he makes, but who prefers to let the wine itself do the talking.
The Great White 2015 and the Great Red 2015 are the first wines Carl has made under this label. We've waited a while for them and, now they're here, we're feeling pretty happy (also an understatement). In fact, we are a bit over excited - to find two astonishingly tasty wines, made by one of Saffa's most talented winemakers for under £20 a bottle is a bit of a coup! The White is perfectly composed with a generous and ambrosial palate full of lemongrass and grapefruit plus hints of honey and white peach. An absolute delight, and massively over delivering for its price point! The red is rich with raspberry and plums and just a hint of violet with a more savoury, spicy-smoke undertone.
