A New Entry in the Pantheon of Swig's All-Time Greats

Chateau Durfort Corbieres 2014

Corbieres, Chateau de Durfort 2014

MORE STOCK COMING SEPTEMBER  - SORRY WE ARE TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK

Today is a momentous day, a day on which we at Swig don our ceremonial robes, swing our censers    and, in hushed tones, recite incantatory oaths in a strange language, all in recognition of the specially exalted status of one of our wines. We've been buying this wonderful little Corbières for four vintages now and have had it pegged for beatification from the first vintage we tasted, back in 2012. Today, we raise Château de Durfort up. This is the Languedoc at its best - a wine that delivers deliciousness by the shedload and at a steal of a price. We're talking liquefied Mediterranean sunshine, beakersful of the true, the blushful Hippopatamus, as the poet sings. In short, this is a wine whose consistent quality and price value, vintage after vintage, makes this a wine worthy of admission to Swig's Pantheon of All-Time Greats.

Chateau Durfort Corbieres 2014: Comes across like a soft, ripe Bordeaux. Mocha notes, baking spices, vanilla and sous bois over dark, glossy cassis, creamy blueberry, strawberry compote and - after all, why not? - a burst of sweet, ripe blackberries. Now it's dark, smoky plum, liquorice and a hint of cough drop. That voluptuousness on the nose anticipates its satin texture. The tannins are very fine, more cocoa and sous bois, giving a delicious, moreish, cocoa-bitter contrast to that sweet ripe fruit. It's a flawlessly harmonious blend. The texture is ethereal and overall the sense of balance is just very, very pleasing. Concentrated but not remotely heavy. Quaffable, even.

But what is this Pantheon we speak of? This sacred colonnaded edifice was commissioned at ruinous expense by Swig owner, Robin Davis, following an especially boozy lunch. The listed building, to which oenophile tourist flock in their hundreds of thousands every year, contains all the wines ever sold by SWiG that have been deemed of unimpeachably high quality and generosity (such as Secateurs, Soli, Collard Picard) following exhaustive, years-long scrutiny be SWiG elders. It is situated in an otherwise nondescript small-business complex, behind some trees, on Sutton Court Road, Chiswick.
