Legends in the Making!

Brilliant New Chablis Producer

Husband and wife, Eleni and Edouard Vocoret are widely regarded as one of the most exciting producers in the new breed of Chablis growers. Reclaiming a small parcel of vines from Edouard's family, the couple have set about making two compelling wines that have been more than enough to convince us that they are destined to join the elite group of top Chablis producers. In short, we think they're legends in the making.

Their 'Le Bas de Chapelot' is the antithesis of the waves of generic bulk Chablis that crams the supermarket shelves. I first tried it during lunch at Noble Rot where it made a perfect pairing to braised cuttlefish risotto, and their slip sole and smoked butter.

It helps that Eleni has been inspired and guided by the iconic Vincent Dauvissat himself - indeed, Eleni works at Domaine Dauvissat-Camus part-time and this is where she and her husband press and bottle their wine - and source their barrels from. There's a lot of facile nonsense written about 'traditional'/'modern' Chablis, as there is about many wine regions, but know that their wines are matured in large old oak barrels, giving the wines a smooth texture, and a hypnotic, honeyed richness as the wines age - when compared with the cool, laser-like precision of Chablis aged in stainless steel. Lovers of Dauvissat or Raveneau will delight in Le Bas de Chapelot - a premier cru quality Chablis from a vineyard parcel beneath Montée de Tonnerre. Fine Chablis is one of the classic stories in the French canon, and the next chapter is being written by the likes of Eleni and Edouard Vocoret.

'Complex, powerful and lively with ripe pear, peach and citrus fruit. Mineral and a bit smoky with high acidity. A lovely linear wine with real depth. Just a faint hint of cabbage and a lovely stony edge. Simply brilliant.'
