With a name like Ata Rangi behind it, this is a pinot that could sell itself several times over, so we'll save the anecdotes and convoluted sales pitches for another day. Crimson is Ata Rangi's - the Kiwi Pinot producer par excellence - second wine, equivalent to a Burgundy village, which is going to give you a taste for their mastery with this mercurial grape at about a third of the price of their flagship wine. It's juicy, it's forest-floory, it compels another sip, and then another, and then another. As an 'everyday pinot', you'll struggle to find better. Definitely one you'll want a decent stock of - and won't find this cheaper anywhere else in the UK than with us.

'New Zealand's best-value Pinot Noir, hands down. Polished, bright and fragrant red cherry fruits take center stage on the nose with little in the way of embellishment or distraction. The really pure red cherry and boysenberry pinot fruits come complete with a subtle twist of spice and are evenly ripened and nicely caught. The palate has a gently rainy tannin texture and some bright and tart cherry fruits. Nice and juicy, super bright, upbeat and fresh.'

Made from hand-picked, 100% destemmed pinot grapes from 10 to 20-year-old vines planted in Ata Rangi's Lismore, Waiora and Walnut Ridge blocks. Pre-fermentation maceration of up to six days allows gentle flavour extraction. This is followed by wild yeast fermentation for two to three weeks with regular hand-plunging, again designed for gentle extraction. The wine is then racked into barrel (20% new), for nine months. Drink now - 2021.

 

Ata Rangi in a nutshell

Ata Rangi is widely regarded as the finest pinot noir producer in New Zealand. The Martinborough estate is owned by Clive Paton and his wife Phyll together with Clive's sister, Alison, and winemaker Helen Masters. Clive planted an originally bare, stony 5ha paddock at the edge of Martinborough, on the southern end of New Zealand's North Island, in 1980. He is one of the winemaking pioneers in this region and his Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is consistently ranked as one of New Zealand's best.

 

Crimson was inspired by a love of New Zealand's native rata and pohutukawa trees and sales of this wine support Project Crimson, a charitable conservation trust which plants and protects these trees. In 2014, Clive's work for the trust earned him the prestigious Loder Cup for conservation, as well as the eternal admiration of his Labrador (see picture above).
