Another Stonking Summer Red

‘Captures all of the vital essence of this grape like never before.’ Matthew Jukes’ Wine of the Week

Touriga Vai Nua Fitapreta 2017

People often ask me what’s the next up-and-coming wine country or region. Of course you can say places like Bulgaria or Hungary – but they still have quite a few years to go before then can really make an impact in the market, whereas Portugal is the place to buy and no-one is leading the pack quite like António Maçanita. His innovative and pioneering style is changing the way we view Portuguese grape varieties - none more so than in this phenomenally delicious take on Touriga Nacional. This is a chance to taste a movement in its infancy before the wave rises up and the market is awash with half-baked, over-priced imitations.

"I know Portugal pretty well and the Alentejo region, to the east of Lisbon, in particular; I have even made wine there a few times, so when a wine comes along that turns an established region, and the Queen of all Portuguese red grapes, on its head, I sit up and listen. Literally, ‘Naked Touriga’, this wine uses Portugal’s most famous red grape and strips it of any clothing. This is inspired because Touriga so often, relies on oak for succour. Via Nua takes its fruit from infertile, rocky, schistous soils, it ferments naturally and then only spends three months in steel tanks before it's bottled with all of its flavours still raging. This tactic captures all of the vital essence of this grape like never before. Even the alcohol is a shock – a lowly 13%, which is bizarre considering that this grape forms the backbone of the finest Vintage Ports ever made. Only 9,900 bottles were made and only a fraction of these has made it to our shores, so phone Swig immediately if you would like to taste this wine." matthewjukes.com
