Gluggable yet Highly Sophisticated

Yabby Lake Red Claw Chardonnay 2016

Red Claw Chardonnay has quietly become Australia's best value Chardonnay. It's the second wine of the extraordinarily good Yabby Lake Chardonnay, from the same vineyards and barrels, but almost half the price. Second wines serve the purpose of making the 1st wine look that much better and able to compete with the best in the world and the more effort they put into that, the better the second wine becomes. It's quite easy to confuse this blind with St Aubin, which these days has tipped over £30 a bottle. It's hugely gluggable yet highly sophisticated, and a perfect dinner party wine with fish.

 

If any Aussie winemaker is going to make a fine Chardonnay in the Burgundian mould, it's Tom Carson. He is on first name terms with the likes of Aubert de Villaine (owner of Romanee Conti) and worked at Bernard Moreau, one of the top-rated Chassagne-Montrachet producers. Carson is a golden boy of Aussie winemaking and Burgundy is his passion. He pored over all the great wines of the Cote d'Or with the late Len 'The Legend' Evans and foremost Aussie critic and eyebrow style icon James Halliday. Tom doesn't mind not driving the latest model Lexus SUV or wearing new season Versace couture but would rather sink his expendable into a handful of bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Rousseau, which he drinks happily and humbly with friends. He is the Australian importer of not only the revered wines of Domaine Leroy but also the hallowed barriques of Tonnellerie de Mercurey.
