AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2018

The 2018 Secateurs wowed us with it's beautiful balance of weight and texture with a fine acidity that will quickly make this your go-to wine. It really separates it from the rafts of pub blackboard Chenins, and puts it in a category of more serious Chenin that often costs a lot more. This is really outstanding wine, and exceptionally good value - it could easily be twice the price and you wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Blank Bottle Kortpad Kaaptoe, Swartland 2017

Smells like luscious turkish delight and crystallised pineapple bashed with quartzy stones. Tangerine fruited with juicy white peaches, honey blossom, with a lifted spiced finish reminiscent of the steep hillsides of Condrieu. Though not, it's not Viognier. 100% Fernao Pires from one 51 year old vineyard planted in sandy soils on the Darling side of the Swartland.

Thorne and Daughters "Rocking Horse" 2017

'Rocking Horse is our cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that we made for our daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is our signature wine and it is where all our work comes together to make our most complete wine. The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. The aromas are of lime leaf, white peach, exotic woods, and sweet dried herbs. In the mouth, the wine starts broad and rich, resolving into a keen line of acidity supported by a gentle tannin with flavours of burnt sugar, orange flower and rooibos leaf.' Mullineux Family White Blend 2017

***5* Platters Wine Guide 2019*** 'The 2017 Old Vines White is a blend of 65% Chenin Blanc, 10% Viognier, 10% Clairette Blanche, 13% Grenache Blanc and 2% Sémillon Gris. This has a lighter bouquet than the previous vintage, featuring touches of honeysuckle and peach skin with white flowers tucked just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and quite tensile, showing a subtle white pepper and marmalade note toward the precise finish. Very fine, although I have a soft spot for the hedonism shown by the 2016.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 91/100 ‘

A A Badenhorst Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc 2017

'The 2017 Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc comes from yellow granite soils at slightly higher elevation than Adi’s other Chenin and with a higher clay content. It has an intriguing, complex bouquet of Japanese yuzu, quince, lemon thyme and lemongrass, a little spicier than its fellow Chenin Blanc. The taut, linear palate is well balanced, with a fine bead of acidity and a lovely sappiness toward the vivid finish. Excellent.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

A A Badenhorst Klip Klop Chenin Blanc 2017

'A first release from the so-called “Stone Hill”, this is a stunning 2017 Chenin (and it’s not alone), this old vine white is unfined and unfiltered, with a hint of fruit sweetness, a creamy mid palate, stony intensity and remarkable palate length.' Tim Atkin MW

A A Badenhorst Piet Bok se Bos Chenin Blanc 2017

'The 2017 Piet Bok Se Bos Steen, which is named after the original farmer of Adi's estate, comes from vines planted in 1968. This is the first time it has not been blended into the Secateurs Chenin Blanc. It has a well-defined bouquet of yellow plum, white flower and light wax resin aromas that unfold beautifully in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a pithy core of yellow stone fruit, a fine bead of acidity and a waxy-textured, quite persistent finish. Superb.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.

Blank Bottle Retirement@65 2017

If you like freshness, florals, prettiness and perfume in your wines, then look no further. Somewhat reminiscent of the wines of the Terrasses du Larzac, with its Pinot Noir like weight and high toned perfume. Very supple palate with juicy blackberries, rasberry leaf, even a little savoury herbal touch. Pop this in the fridge for half an hour and pour liberally. With bbq grub, with friends. At 12% it makes a fabulous lunchtime option as well, and is sure to be a talking point with a name like this!

Mullineux Syrah 2016

'The 2016 Syrah is 100% whole-bunch fruit, and I think this gives it the edge over the 2015. It has a very fresh, focused nose with more edginess than the previous vintage, offering touches of peppermint and dried herbs. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin - quite a "cool customer," presenting a longer, more precise finish than the 2015. Excellent.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

A A Badenhorst Family Red 2015

The 2015 represents a milestone for this wine - the 10th vintage Adi has made - and probably the best so far. You can overlook the Family Red in its youth but Adi's Family Red ages really well. It takes time to open up. So decant it and be patient.

Blank Bottle BIG Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

"You expect to find wacky stuff going on at a tasting like this, but The B.I.G from Pieter Walser takes the biscuit … Crazy? Yes. Delicious? Yes. It’s structured and tannic but with an appealing smash of ripe red and black fruit and some tobacco and tomato leaf notes too. Notorious." Chris Wilson, The Buyer, tasting at New Wave 2017

A A Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca 2017

'The 2017 Sk’Windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca comes from a seven-hectare unpronounceable vineyard whose name means “gusty wind,” planted in 1962, when this Portuguese variety was becoming increasingly popular in the Capelands. It has a very pure blackberry and briar bouquet with hints of pressed iris and later, just a hint of canned prune. The palate is medium-bodied with black plum, blackberry and light white pepper notes, intriguingly almost Barolo-like in tannic structure, with gentle grip on the finish. Superb.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

A A Badenhorst Secateurs Rose 2018

'The 2018 Secateurs Swartland Rosé is a straight Cinsault bottled in mid-April. It has a pretty red cherry and light grapefruit bouquet, touches of strawberry developing in the glass. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, nice weight (perhaps more than previous vintages) and lovely, pure red cherry and strawberry toward the finish. Excellent.' Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Mullineux Family Straw Wine 2017 (37.5cl)

A five-star wine in Platter’s, South Africa’s leading wine guide, a 97-pointer for Wine Advocate in the US, this is a bar-setting South African sweet wine of quite outstanding depth and length. The grapes are dried outside in the shade until they are half raisined, concentrating flavours, acidity and sugar into a super intense, but balanced treat. Fermentation is in old French barrels with indigenous yeasts and can last up to a year. The naturally high acid in Chenin Blanc gives this wine great lift and focus. A vinous marvel.

Mullineux Family Straw Wine 2018 (37.5cl)

'The 2018 is a touch richer than the 2017 due to the drought. The flavor profile is quite normal - marmalade, almonds, marzipan, dried apricots, and ginger. The 2018 has more intensity all round - weight, aromatics and also acidity, so just a more engaging experience!' Chris Mullineux

Nothing short of revelatory, Adi Badenhorst has taken vermouth to new frontiers with this remarkable aromatised fortified brew. Drawing from recipes dating back a century, this is spicy, aromatic, intense, and remarkable. Drink on the rocks with a twist, or with Adi's incredible Swaan tonic. "It's really really good stuff... I will be creating a twist on a vesper martini with it" - Helder Pinheiro, Head Barman, Annabel's
