Weisser Burgunder Weiler Schlipf CS Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2014

On the nose - cheese rind, crystallised pineapple and lemon biscuits. The nose gives a hint to the voluptuos and nuanced texture. Creamy notes swirl among delicate aromas of pale roses, lillies and that Chablis esque stone - gout de terroir as they'd say in French. It is intense, yet with soft flesh, perfume and mouth feel. Rich mouthfeel, yet a very fine acidity that guides it beautifully to a precise long finish. Note to self. Drink with Coquilles St Jacques, Not peanut butter. Weisser Burgunder AKA Pinot Blanc.

Yalumba The Menzies Vineyard The Cigar Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

'On the Nose: Intense complex bouquet of cherries and dark chocolate. There is lavender perfume and a touch of dried sage. On the Palate: A burst of plush ripe fruit reminiscent of mulberry compote. These fruit characters build the wine in the mid palate where they are met with a complex hint of ironstone.'

Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2014

Lovely ripe plum and blackcurrant with cocoa dust, tobacco leaf, a touch of sandlewood. Very appealing. The palate is a fantastic contrast of those bright plum and currant fruits wrapped in dark secondaries – cigar box, dark chocolate and a bit of pipe tobacco. A producer just over the border from Pomerol, making wine, now with the help of the former winemaker of Petrus, Yannick Reyrel. Smooth for Bordeaux. Mull over it in a decanter and you can keep it for another 4 or 5 years, and get the tertiary flavours of mature Bordeaux.

Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf CS, Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2014

A wine with the dew still on it. Lovely youthful red cherry, strawberry and blackberry fruit and a subtle wisp of smoke, dried orangepeel, sandalwood, gamey, new leather (Johannes's CS range is partly matured in new barriques) notes emerging with time in the glass. I'm transported to Gevrey tasting this. On the palate, the tannins are present but fine enough for the wine to be very enjoyable now. Laying down would be wise, however. The wine is structured but subtly so, with a firm backbone of acidity - from a combination of the limestone soil and the cooler 2014 vintage - suggest ageability of ten years at least. Johannes management of the flavour profiles and the clear delineation of quality levels is remarkable.

Maison Blanche Montagne St Emilion 2014

After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits. There is something a bit like a Medoc wine that comes from the Cabernet Franc in the blend with Merlot (like Cheval Blanc) but also undeniably charming and drinkable as St Emilion should be. Being organic makes it even better. It tastes so pure.

Chances are that you’ll be entertaining guests at some point this Chrimbo season, and chances are that among said guests there’ll be a wine buff, some know-it-all who will tell you in tedious detail why the wine you serve would have been better from such and such producer, why the vintage you’ve chosen doesn’t quite reach the heights of whichever he or she has read is better, and why wines from the former eastern bloc are all shameful swill and best avoided. Pour such guests a glass of this blanc de blancs pretending it’s Champagne and delight in their embarrassed squirming when you later reveal it to be from BULGARIA of all places. This sparkler is actually as classy as they come: 24 months on lees adds brioche richness to crisp citrus and white currant fruit.
