That touch of Pauillac, that fragrance of Margaux, that charm of St Emilion... ah, yes, I remember it well! Good Bordeaux at this price is as rare as a hen harrier sighting. We’ve not found better at this price for many years. It also happens to come from the excellent 2015 vintage, which can help propel a comparatively modest Bordeaux to heights of a more expensive wine. Our friend in Bordeaux who works with a few Chateaux and is not supposed to favour any particular one, did say, ‘Ah, nice choice – it’s a bit of a secret’. Very good with roasts.

Robin's Note:

I've been trying Bordeaux for several years hoping for a good one at this price. To find a delicious, classy Bordeaux that has a hint of all the things we like - berries, cedar and oak aromas, with good body and concentration at £12.50 - is not something that happens each year. Drink with: Roast beef! But all the roasts, as well as roasted vegetables, and I find Bordeaux like this often very good with fish, and cheese, of course. The 'Coteaux' in the Cotes du Bourg: To find good value Bordeaux it's almost inevitable you'll have to look beyond the famous regions. The Cotes du Bourg is on Bordeaux' right bank - opposite Margaux - and up from Fronsac, St Emilion and Pomerol. The soil here is limestone and clay. The Chateau has been in the family for five generations. Maryvonne and Francis Bebot take great care and due to its modest size can give a lot of attention to the vines.
