We’re reliably informed by winemaker Antonio Macanita that ‘Vai Nua’ means ‘goes naked’ in Portuguese. This should not be taken as an instruction to spice up your Christmas dinner party (“For some reason no one even touched the sprouts...”), but rather as an indicator that this is one of the brightest, most quaffable Portuguese reds ever likely to pass your lips. Touriga is known for producing big wines with lots of alcohol and tannin. Here it’s unoaked and as delicate as the dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, showing off the variety’s floral and hedgerow fruit notes.

Tasting Notes

Made from mature (average 30 years old) vines on rocky schist soil at 300-400m above sea level in Alentejo. Most of the wine has 30 days on skins with wild yeast fermentation. A portion undergoes semi-carbonic maceration - a technique most common in Beaujolais which brings out lighter red fruit and floral characters and softens tannin. The wine is aged for three months in steel tank - no oak at all - then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Press Note:

"This one captured my heart at the first sniff. It's pure touriga nacional, the most respected of the port grapes." Victoria Moore, The Telegraph 'Oh my. I love this wine so much I want to drink the bottle now. Touriga Nacional not from the Douro, from the Alentejano. No oak! Mineral and dark and floral, like the cleanest of Rhône syrahs; violet-scented and fresh and thirst-quenching bright, with just a hint of the grape’s savage underbelly. I accidentally chilled it and - well, that works. £17.50 from @swig_wine' Victoria Moore
