Herdade do Portocarro

We had never come across a wine named after a bus route before sampling Herdade do Portocarro’s Autocarro No 27.

The number 27 is the bus you take if you want to get from Lisbon to the winery (which is situated to the south of the city, overlooking the small village of São Romão). An exciting new project set up to draw more attention to quality Portuguese wine, it straddles the border of Setubal and Alentejo, though the wines are more of the latter than the former, possessing a rich dustiness that suggests the frontier wines of the region. The estate is in the process of converting to biodynamics, and produces olive oil as well as rice. Inspired by some of the classic Tuscan wineries, their goal is to be sustainable and multidisciplinary. The wines have already gained praise internationally and we’re excited to see what they do next.
