We are always banging on about the New Wave movement in South Africa, and rightly so as it is one of the most exciting areas in wine at the moment, but it's certainly not a Saffa-only phenomenon and so now we have a taste of some Spanish rebels for you. The Ruiz Jimenez family began their career in the industry as farmers, growing grapes for bigger producers. Until Francisco got his hands on the reins that is. He looked at the mass-produced Rioja's around him and realised he could do it better. Not only has he installed a brand new winery and completely turned the vineyards over to organic production, he is also constantly creating innovative and completely natural solutions to problems otherwise treated by chemicals. This is a man on a mission and golly do we enjoy drinking the results!
They produce an organic white Rioja that is a world away from its often bland peers, packed full of flavour and a touch of oak. And in the red corner a Garnacha that is effortlessly inticing the nose is packed full of rhubarb and deliciously concentrated raspberries with just a hint of smoky spice.
