We firmly believe that Adi Badenhorst is the most exciting winemaker in South Africa. He is also the most frustrating. His laid back, self-deprecating, playful manner keeps you guessing and makes you wonder whether he has any idea what he is actually doing, whether he just chucks some grapes into a vat and hopes for the best, but we know full well that there is a huge amount of expertise that goes on behind closed doors, when no one is around to witness his skill and diligence ...and spoil his reputation! Part of his charm is his teasing rhetoric, his wide-eyed puzzlement at any form of investigation and his answering of a question with a question. After a few days in his company, however, you begin to realise that the important thing isn't the hows and the whys, but the simple pleasure of the wine in the glass. Damn! He's like one of those eastern gurus who lets you see that the answer was in front of you all the time, you only had to change your focus to see it.

Tasting Notes

Simply put, we would prefer to drink this than 95% of the Chateauneuf-du-Papes on the market. It's a bold, rich, spicy, beefy South African interpretation of a classic Rhone blend and evokes sunny Mediterranean flavours of hillside herbs, black olives, smoked ham and peppery spices amidst a wealth of deep, mouth-filling fruit.

More Info

The harmony between the savoury flavours and the succulent fruit is seriously appealing and you find yourself craving the next sip before you've even finished the one in your mouth.

“The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.”
