There is such polish and depth and aromatic lift to this wine. Black cherry liqueur, even, with raspberry compote, sandalwood and the hallmark black pepper spice and violet of Mencia, plus a gorgeous sage-like herb spice. Lots of crossover with Northern Rhone syrah and in a way a touch of Pinot.Super-smooth, with lipsmacking freshness. This is benchmark Mencia: approachable, immediately drinkable, yet profound and capable of ageing, full of depth yet with wonderful freshness and sense of terroir.
Burgundian in style, El Castro de Valtuille Mencía Joven isproduced from the variety Mencía. The grapes originate from vines planted in sandy and clay soils at 530-628 meters above sea level. Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines.
