Tasting Notes

This is the sort of Cabernet that might not first catch your eye, or do well in a blind tasting. It doesn't shout at you or perhaps seem as striking, particularly when tasting young. But, it's the wine's balance, precision and focused intensity that caught our attention. It has an oh-so-fine leafy, cool climate Cabernet lifted perfume. a fine-bone china like frame, with such poise and quiet power. There's a kiss of tar and plums on the palate, with a stony, celery-salt-sprinkled quiet power to it. So sleek, and beginning to gain a bit of weight just now in early 2022. This will cellar for many years to come. For the moment, other people haven’t spotted how good this wine is, but we reckon it’s one of the best value Cabernet Sauvignons from anywhere in the world.

More Info

Leeu Passant is the Franschhoek Winery of three times Platter Guide SA Winery of the Year, Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. The wines produced are multi-regional bottlings from exceptional sites, inspired by the classic age-worthy wines of the Cape from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. These were authentic wines unique to the culture, terroir, history and tastes of the Cape, and they strive to reflect these unique factors in our wines.

FROM THE PRESS

“The aromatics are wonderfully lifted and perfumed showing all the intricacies of cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. There is an intriguing piquant leafy spice that melts into notes of liquid minerality, granitic dust and graphite while underneath the mineral veil is a powerful depth of fruit held on a very short rein lest it bursts out the glass. There are seductive notes of violets, sweet cedary spice, saline black currant, hints of iodine and fresh kelp brought in on the morning’s tide. On the palate there is plenty of textural precision on display for all to see, confidently boasting layer upon layer of stony minerality, sweet cherry tobacco, cassis leaf, black tea, tilled earth and creamy dense powdery tannins. Fabulously old school on so many levels, this wine will undoubtedly age well and develop into something that harks back to the great old Clarets of times gone by. Drink from 2024 until 2040+. 94/100 ”
