We’ve been working with Craig and Anne for 5 years now, and from the start fully expected their Cabernets and Chardonnays to achieve cult status. So they have. Demand is always high and volumes are very low. Restless River’s Chardonnay vineyards are some of the oldest the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde valley. Tiny yields and looong, slow maturation produces some extraordinarily concentrated fruit.
This is hands down every member of Swig's favourite treat. You'll get hints of those unctuous salted caramel, toffee apple oaked Chardonnay flavours, but they're tempered by a pithy citrusy acidity and a purity on the palate which makes it actually quite delicate. It's a fascinating wine, which seems to flirt between hedonism and finesse from first drop to last.
FROM THE PRESS
“Craig Wessels picks this two-hectare block in five stages to achieve maximum balance and complexity. Large barrel and amphora-fermented, it’s a stunning, elegantly refined Chardonnay with understated oak, some cinnamon spice, good texture and a fresh, citrus peel finish. One of the Cape’s best Chardonnays.”Tim Atkin MW 96/100
“A subtle and elusive nose – not very much primary fruit in evidence but some lemon and white peach if you use your imagination while there’s also an appealing biscuit-like quality plus both some flintiness and earthiness. The palate is lean, fresh with a very long, salty finish. A triumph of understatement and now starting to take its place among the Cape’s best.”94/100 Winemag.co.za
“Bottled two weeks ago. Focused, fresh and mineral with lovely acidity. Really precise with some meal and pear notes as well as keen lemony acidity. Has structure and linearity. There's lots of flavour here but it's all nicely channelled. Shows great precision and a long stony, lemon finish. ”94/100 Jamie Goode
