If you were a grape, this would be where you went on your holidays. At Cupano, perched on a beautiful ridge near Camigliano that slopes down to the Ombrone river, they harvest everything by hand and use a horse and plough to tend the soil. One of the things that demonstrates the great attention to detail shown by Cupano is that owner & winemaker, Lionel Cousin, walks through his vineyard every day removing individual berries with a pair of nail scissors. It is winemaking on a miniaturist scale. Compare that to the infamous story about one of Australia's huge wineries, where the double-width mechanical harvesters went through the vineyards with such indiscriminate disregard that when they went to press the grapes, one of the workers found a bicycle in the crusher.

“Bright dark red. Sweet strawberry, blueberry, licorice and a strongly floral nuance on the nose; so piercing and intense in fact it is almost aromatic. Then silky and sweet in the mouth, offering a very fine-grained texture to the ripe but not at all hot flavors of red cherry, milk chocolate and old leather. Rather gently and lighter styled Brunello than is common for Cupano (the vineyards of which grow in one of Montalcino’s warmer terroirs) closing long and with a fine dusting of tannins. Believe it or not, this strikes me as a much better wine than Cupano’s 2013 Brunello (a much better vintage than 2014) that I found much too dark in its aroma and flavor profile. Lionel Cousin is a Henry Jayer disciple and his Brunellos often show an aromatic sweetness and fleshiness that recall the Burgundies of the master. The 2014 is a very good showing in an admittedly difficult year.”Ian D'Agata, Vinous
