Tasting Notes
A warmth and charm on first nosing: lovely gentle brush, baked plums, cocoa, and a scattering of fennel seeds and a tinge of old wood and bramble fruit. There's such a deft touch to the palate - it has a lovely lift and the most delectable dark chocolate minty note coupled with warm herbal tones, like putting your nose into a paper bag of the best Isle of Wight tomatoes, and some pipe tobacco. It's a lovely thing to drink now, whether poured straight from the bottle or decanted, but you can certainly stash it away for a few years (30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, 18% Malbec & 12% Petit Verdot, aged in barrel for 2 years.)

We loved our visit to Buitenverwachting, set in Constantia’s oldest and most prized vineyard, as much for the people as for its wines and beautiful setting. The ever-genial host and owner, Lars Maack, is always smiling. He is joined by Brad Paton, who is one of the most lovely and talented winemakers around, and the equally delightful, and wise-headed, Herman Kirschbaum, the previous cellar master who now oversees the vineyards.
