The Curator White Blend is a feat of brilliance. It’s vanishingly rare to find this kind of flavour, balance and freshness in a white at this price. Like being handed a bowl of just prepared fruit salad! Crunchy apple, honeydew melon, apple bon bons, with a surprisingly ample mouthfeel, greengage and lemon sherbert loaded. There's notes of gooseberry fool there too, with yellow plums and a fresh, green grape finish. Produced predominantly from old bush vines grown in granite and slate soils. Chenin blanc makes up the main portion of the blend giving backbone and structure. The spontaneously fermented chardonnay took ages to ferment, resulting in great texture and wacky aromas of dried peaches, apricots and ripe citrus. The Viognier - from one of Adi's favourite growers and vineyards - completes the Swartland canvas adding spice and palate length to an impeccable white blend.
We firmly believe that Adi Badenhorst is the most exciting winemaker in South Africa. He is also the most frustrating. His laid back, self-deprecating, playful manner keeps you guessing and makes you wonder whether he has any idea what he is actually doing, whether he just chucks some grapes into a vat and hopes for the best, but we know full well that there is a huge amount of expertise that goes on behind closed doors, when no one is around to witness his skill and diligence ...and spoil his reputation!
FROM THE PRESS
“The 2019 The Curator White Blend consists of 83% Chenin Blanc, 10% Chardonnay and 7% Viognier. It has an attractive nose featuring tropical notes of passion fruit and guava, maybe a little smudged but generous. The palate is simple but balanced, displaying a touch of spice on the entry, a nice twist of sour lemon counterbalancing the richness of this Chenin Blanc, and then a welcome saltiness on the finish. Fine.”Neal Martin SA Report 2021
