52% Chenin Blanc, 40% Verdelho, 5% Grenache Blanc and 3% Grenache Gris from sites across Stellenbosch and the Swartland, incorporating a little skin contact and mix of fermentation vessels too. Like the 2019, this has an amazing coiled-spring like energy with lime zest and kaffir lime leaf, chalky notes, tart yellow plums and underripe mango. There's kiwi fruit, green apple pastilles and rock candy, leesiness as the wine warms and relaxes in the glass and a fresh green herb finish.
Franco Lourens spent some years working with the great Chris Alheit before setting to focus entirely on his own range of wines. This is a breathtakingly self-assured range and almost in the blink of an eye places Franco into the very top bracket of top-end New Wave SA producers. Franco is a leading light of South Africa’s New Wave and champion of old-vine Chenin, among others. He is inevitably set to join the likes of Chris Alheit, Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst, Duncan Savage et alia in the shimmering constellation of New Wave South African stars. BUT - and here's the rub - since Franco is still relatively unknown, the prices do not yet reflect how sensational the wines really are. So this is a perfect opportunity for Swigger's to bag a rare fine wine bargain!
FROM THE PRESS
“Citrus, peach and hay plus a slight reductive overtone on the nose. It’s the palate, however that really impresses with a wonderful coiled quality about it, the flavours taking a good long while to unwind in the mouth. Great fruit definition matched by punchy acidity, a slight grippy quality to the finish. 94/100”Winemag.co.za
