Having heard exciting things about him, we made the major diversion on our trip to Burgundy in February 2022 to meet vigneron Stephane in person. What a brilliant decision that was. Located in the tiny village of Verdigny just northwest of Sancerre, he farms a scattering of hillside parcels totalling 13ha; 10 planted to Sauvignon and the remaining 3 to Pinot Noir on rocky Kimmeridgian limestone, organically too. As his father didn't bottle and instead sold the wine to other producers, Stephane is actually the one putting the name on the map. Stylistically, the domaine is about elegance, restrained power and making a lovely drink that blends beautifully with food, and ages superbly too.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2466/1541/products/Cherrier-Sancerre-Blanc_9663d4a5-ccd0-43bd-befc-0b81714255cb.jpg?v=1750863375
clochard-la-calcinara-2024
Clochard La Calcinara 2024

“Nutty nose. Beautifully textured palate and delicious depth of fruit – with nashi pear and subtle spice. Seamless and refreshing, the wine finishes long and fine. The 2025 season brought another cool and late vintage. Low yields produced intense wines with impeccable balance and persistence. The Pinot Gris is planted in Block 2, in a section of the vineyard on sandy clay loam soils, with iron shot stone and light medium clay. The fruit was hand picked on 19 February and whole bunch pressed. The juice was then cold settled and wild fermented with 80% in stainless steel and 20% in old French puncheons (500L). The wine was estate bottled in July 2025. It is complex and vibrant and best enjoyed in its youth.

#Tasting#

Tom Carson is a true winemaker's winemaker, an uber-geek known for his forensic attention to detail. He is famous for stunningly pure Cinsaults from Darling and Stellenbosch, but he started making a Chenin Blanc for his wife a few years ago, when she became fed up with only ever having red wine in the house. They hunted around to find the best grapes for their project and found a Darling vineyard planted in 1985, comprised of dry-farmed, ocean-facing bush vines on decomposed granite. The result is absolutely divine. I loved it! It's superb for the quality. And it's become, unexpectedly, very sought after.

#Tasting#

We've known the lovely Alex Milner of Natte Valleij for many years. He used to come into our office over a decade ago waving his wines around leaving them for us to taste. But much of the work that has gone into these is via the exploration on his bicycle over years, covering thousands of kilometres to find old vineyards. To say he is a keen cyclist is an understatement!
