As the Barolo boys say, it's rare for a wine with such concentration to be consider charming, but this one truly is. Tannins are definitely a major component of this wine. An iron fist in a velvet glove as wine writers used to say. If I think of wines like Cascina Francia by Conterno at £260 a bottle, give me this any day. It's more delicious and I'd say considerably better. Another phenomenal value wine. Off the charts for the price. No wonder they call this Giacosa on a budget. This headliner Barolo is using their best two vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, Ginestra and Mosconi.

#Tasting#

Both winemaker Oscar Arrivabene, and the great Bruno Giacosa, share a wine consultant, one of the most respected in Italy, Dante Scaglione. That's always a very good start, Sharing anything with Bruno Giacosa would be considered a step in the right direction. The next steps and considered the most important to the estate, was those taken amongst their vines. Dominco had describe being "convinced that to obtain good wines you have to grow the vineyard with love and dedication, establishing an intense bond with the land and continuous exchange to learn to understand the needs of the vine at any time of the year." Dominico's wife Giuliana is the head of the ship, having been there every step of the way with her late husband, when they took things over from his father in the mid 70's. She has continued their shared ethos and has some very talented people working with her that feed into this identity.

The 2020 has amazing finesse and purity. The nose makes me think of the most perfect white meringue, with a hint of sherbert, a touch of lemon syllabub, and then there's a depth of fruit, but dry, cool fruit like you get with classic Chablis, but then you find some riper more generous notes, and you feel the poised vinous texture and the tempering fine scintillating bubbles. The beautiful flavour held up by its tension and acidity lasts for a minute. It's such a delicious wine with such a wonderful sensation on the palate that you can't help but sip and appreciate its quality and beauty and finesse, again and again.

#Tasting#

Ten years ago I met Dermot Sugrue for the first time. It was a tasting at Claridge's. All the producers present had a table except for Dermot, who was sitting outside the entrance to the ballroom clutching an unlabelled bottle, looking forlorn. Everyone scurried past, in their rush to taste the famous wines beyond. But it's precisely what other people overlook that I find the most interesting. Dermot poured me a taster and I could not believe how good it was. For a moment it was like the world stopped turning as I realised this was a seminal wine in the history of English wine. It was as if I'd been waiting my entire wine career to taste this wine. In a movie it would have been with an accompaniment of Ode to Joy. I put my hands up for all we could get. It was 25 dozen. I described it as my wine experience of the year. And it's that very same wine, The Trouble with Dreams 2009, but in magnum, that won Best in Show at the Decanter wine awards, picked among thousands of top wines from around the world, include famous Champagnes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2466/1541/files/BC_Upload_448ea45b-e450-4902-9ab9-c9a6ef46300b.png?v=1751013085
picpoul-de-pinet-laurence-de-veyrac-2024
Picpoul de Pinet Laurence de Veyrac 2024

For a zingy white, this is just unbeatable. Lemon sorbet, lightly floral - think acacia blossom and wallflowers at their most scented at the end of a hot day, with a lick of refreshing flintiness, wet stone and pineapple too, and pithy, impressively long finish. Picpoul is the perfect response to sunny weather - and our Laurence de Veyrac Picpoul is a classic of the genre, the 'Chablis of the Med'. Drink cool. So good to drink with oysters, butterflied mackerel thrown on the bbq and lots of lemon.

#Tasting#

Since 1997, the estate has been owned and run by Béatrice and Christophe Muret and on their watch  quality, rather than quantity, has been the focus. With a strong focus on organic farming and environmentally sustainable practices, the Murets have struck an admirable balance between .
