Warm, gorgeous, with fine bitter sweet aromatics that define Monte Santoccio and Quintarelli. Chocolate dipped cherries, pot pourri, kirsch and sweet balsam-y herbs, soft leather, cherry blossom and Christmas spice. Long and quite lush, with sweet scents of tobacco drying in a kiln house. 3 months drying of grapes, 30 months in tonneaux.

#Tasting#

Formerly an assistant to the legendary Valpolicella producer Giuseppe Quintarelli, Nicola Ferrari and his wife Laura now make their wines from 7ha of organically farmed vines in Fumane. The wines are nothing short of sensational. The fruit floats in the mouth with the wee hint of bitterness that comes from the process soaking the wine on the skins of the just fermented Amarone grapes that adds just the right amount of tension and intrigue. While not being a big wine, there is plenty of flavour and complexity. It is wonderful now and one of my favourite drinks. But it will be super to drink over the next 3 to 6 years and a good value wine for cellaring. This is a wine for your most luxurious dinner parties.

#Tasting#

Sometimes you taste a good wine, decide to buy it – and that’s that. Robin’s instinctive pursuit of Nicola’s wines was an adventure in itself - and one that was entirely worth it. Formerly an assistant to the legendary Valpolicella producer Giusseppe Quintarelli, Nicola Ferrari now makes (far too little of) his own wine from 3ha of organically farmed vines in Fumane. One of the top scoring Valpolicella's in Decanter. Such a lovely nose, and this feels so natural to drink. In this beautiful 2022 you get a scent of cherry, but it's not tight, it's open and charming, with some notes a bit, almost of Pinot Noir, and the weight of Burgundy, but then there's a lovely hint of bitter herbs, but just faintly so, like in a vermouth. The palate is pure, fruity and elegant, although with a savoury element, too. It holds really well in the bottle once opened. Certainly for a few days. It's completely ready to drink on day one, but opens up and gets a bit better on day two, and then holds well for a few days.

#Tasting#

Sometimes you taste a good wine, decide to buy it – and that’s that. Planted on limestone, at a higher elevation than his own vineyards with ancient tree-like vines, although this wine is mostly from vines around 35 years. You get the most brilliant clarity and depth in the wine thanks to these soils. As Robin says, a very Bepe style wine! Aged for 5 years in oak, and a further year in bottle pre-release, unhurried, so as to allow optimal complexity and balance.

#Tasting#

Monte Santoccio's fabulous new releases have coincided with some brilliant press for all of the wines. They are at a new level, with greater clarity, and layers of fruit, although still with their trademark finesse and elegance; a reflection of Nicola Ferrari's 13 years making wine with the late, legend of Amarone and Valpolicella, Giuseppe Quintarelli. The cellar was built a few years ago, and this has helped, along with a portion of grapes that come from the ancient vineyard they rent in Purano, a hamlet, even higher than where they are, atop Fumane.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2466/1541/files/BC_Upload_acedd316-82a1-43ea-af7c-11e5ca0ec1ed.png?v=1767359238
