Tasting Notes

This is Lionel’s wine made from Cabernet and Merlot. It comes from the outstanding 2016 vintage, and is very full and complete. You're getting a sort of Tuscan Pomerol, or St Emilion, but it ages with the grace of the Brunello. It’s the first vintage that has had a small amount of Cabernet Franc added, for a bit of aromatic complexity, freshness and roundness. I suspect Lionel planted Cabernet Franc after his friend, the winemaker from the great Chateau Cheval Blanc, visited.

More Info

We should not be surprised, as Lionel Cousin's mentor was one of the greatest winemakers to ever live. As Ian D'Agata writes, "Lionel Cousin is an Henry Jayer disciple and his Brunellos often show an aromatic sweetness and fleshiness that recall the Burgundies of the master. " Also, Luciano Sandrone, the great producer of Barolo, with whom Lionel hangs out with once a year with other winemaking friends, including Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee Conti, reckons Cupano Brunello is one of Italy's greatest wines, and even will serve it at a Barolo festival to fellow winemakers and wine lovers!
