Tasting Notes

A marvel. It has that gorgeous weightless floating Jayer-esque power, such precision on the palate, with hints of old wood, like an old treasure chest, gentle spice, like walking through a Turkish bazaar, bracken, blackberry fruit, lightly sappy on the palate, with cherries and tiny wild strawberries. Tannins are very fine and refined, with superb length. Gorgeous. Drink now (with a good decant) to 2030. Imogen

More Info

It’s the almost obsessive attention to detail that sets Cupano apart. Before planting his land, Lionel carried up rocks from the Ombrone river bank to improve grounding and drainage. Each vine in the 7 hectares of vineyards was planted by his own hand, and his meticulous attention extends to pruning individual bunches with nail-scissors! It is also completely organic and some biodynamic practices. Although we have said it before, it’s worth a reminder: Lionel learned winemaking under the tutelage of the late Henri Jayer (of Vosne-Romanée), arguably the greatest and most influential winemaker of the 20th Century. They became close friends until Jayer died in 2006, and Lionel is committed to maintaining his friend's principles.

FROM THE PRESS

“The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino draws you in with an intense display of black raspberries, dusty rose and crushed rocks. With further coaxing, notes of clove, allspice and mocha evolve in the glass. This is a pure pleasure on the palate, silky and refined, conveying a balanced inner sweetness contrasted by tart wild berries, plum skins and minerals that create a more tactile feel toward the close. Residual acids keep the expression remarkably fresh, as fine-grained tannins settle in, all under an air of tobacco and balsam herbs. This is a slightly heady yet balanced and thoroughly enjoyable expression of the 2017 vintage. I can’t wait to see what a year or two of cellaring will unlock. 92 points, drink 2024 - 2029.”
Eric Guido, Vinous
“Lustrous ruby. A fascinating nose of dark-cherry fruit and stony, minerally, saline hints supported by touches of oak. This is really super-skilfully done. Quite a spectacular palate with supple, focused and juicy fruit and gorgeous, fine, chewy tannins. Already hard to resist. Very long and concentrated, but not heavy, in spite of the elevated alcohol. A triumph considering the very testing year. Drink 2022-2032.”
