Tasting Notes

Caramel, coffee and nuances of oak on the nose, veiling gorgeous fruit underneath. Musk, wild rose, black cherries and plum. The mouthfeel is extraordinary – there are few wines that I have tasted with as much poise and grace as this. Like their Brunello, it floats across the palate, going on and on, enveloping every tastebud and sense with more cherry fruit, wall flowers and crushed rocks.  Incredible length, as Galloni says too, finishing with a gentle coffee bean, blueberry note and soft hint of cinnamon. It’s the almost obsessive attention to detail that sets Cupano apart. Before planting his land, Lionel carried up rocks from the Ombrone river bank to improve grounding and drainage. Each vine in the 7 hectares of vineyards was planted by his own hand, and his meticulous attention extends to pruning individual bunches with nail-scissors! It is also completely organic and some biodynamic practices. Although we have said it before, it’s worth a reminder: Lionel learned winemaking under the tutelage of the late Henri Jayer (of Vosne-Romanée), arguably the greatest and most influential winemaker of the 20th Century. They became close friends until Jayer died in 2006, and Lionel is committed to maintaining his friend's principles.



“Like forbidden fruit, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens slowly in the glass, blowing off an initial whiff of sweet spice and pine shavings. Beneath the surface, there are grumbling depths of black cherries, tea leaves, dried roses, mocha and smoke. This fleshes out across the palate like pure silk, motivated by vibrant acidity, while potent mineral-tinged red and blue berries slowly saturate the senses. A web of fine-grained tannin remains as the 2016 flexes its structural muscle and wrangles its sweet vivid fruits. That said, nearly a minute goes by and you can still taste hints of blueberry skins and plums plus nuances of vanilla bean. Cupano made a marvelous Riserva in the 2016 vintage. 95 points, drink 2026 - 2036”
