The best Barberas are found in Asti. This is because, although there's a lot of it in neighbouring Alba, most of the best vineyard sites there are given over to the 'king of grapes', Nebbiolo; in Asti, Barbera takes pride of place on many of the best growing sites, which provide the best expressions of the grape. That's why Barbera d'Asti has been recognised as a 'DOCG' - the top quality level of Italian wine.
