Tasting Notes

Some of you may remember the illustrious, old-vine Kalleske '12 that graced the Swig offerings many moons ago and the most patient may still have some in their cellar's. It was the fruit from this vineyard, planted in 1905, that was always sold to Penfold’s for their famous wine ’Grange’ (Australia’s most expensive and ageworthy wine), until Tony Kalleske took over the reins to see what he could do with it himself. Over the past couple of years we have kept an eye on this innovative producer, dipping our pipette into the tasting barrel from time-to-time, and have fallen head over heels for the 'Eduard' Shiraz 2017.

More Info

Kalleske's ungrafted, dryfarmed centenerian vines are the absolute best, low-yielding, small-berried beauties South Australia has to offer. This is without doubt another show-stopping icon in the making. For lovers of big, complex, concentrated Aussie Shiraz, this really is the motherlode! We think in this wine you smell and taste some of that character that you can in the great Grange.

FROM THE PRESS

“The highest scoring wine in the entire Organic Masters tasting this year turned out to be for a flagship red from Australia’s Kalleske, called Eduard. Named after the Barossa producer’s founder, Karl Heinrich ‘Eduard’ Kalleske, it uses Shiraz from a historic vineyard, first planted in 1905, ensuring it is a wine of great concentration but balance too. The result is seriously impressive, with layers of flavour from blackcurrant to ripe plum, a touch of prune, sweet balsamic and black pepper, along with dried mint and fleshy cherry, supported by grippy tannins, to give a dry finish, that also features lingering roasted coffee and vanilla pod flavours from the barrel-ageing process. It’s a remarkable wine that’s both big and beautiful.”
