We were so excited to try this wine on visiting Garesio in January 2023. Produced from their crus, Cerretta (shared with G Conterno whose Barolo sells at £300 a bottle, compared with Garesio's at £75, and Altare) and the young vines of Bricco delle Viole owned by the famous Vajra, whose Barolo from this vineyard sells at £80 a bottle. Gorgeous aromas of wild rose and notes of wild strawberries, which over time evolve with pink pepper. Very good aromatic persistence in the mouth, and velvety tannins and a very persistent finish.
It's thanks to our dear friend Nelson Pari that we have to thank for the introduction to Garesio. These are Barolo for the ages. These are like fine, restrained Burgundies, that at first nosing and taste, you could miss, but give them the time they need, and they are glorious, with the classical Serralunga terroir nose of roses and minerals. Sharing vineyards with Giacomo Conterno and Altare, their cellar is located between their two cru sites, Ceretta and Gianetto. They farm organically, but as the sites both border non-organic neighbouring vineyards, they do not declare it. All wines are vinified and aged in the same way so as to best express their identity and terroir.
FROM THE PRESS
“Pale ruby. Strawberry and cherry with savoury saline hints and a suggestion of oak. Sappy cherry fruit with fine tannins and vibrant finish. Distinct and with real personality. 17+”Walter Speller, Jancis Robinson
“Comes from 100 per cent Barolo vineyards in Piedmont, north-west Italy and good ones too... it’s delicate and ethereal and the more you swirl the glass the more you get out of it – fruit, spice, herbs and the sense of it being a fine, five times as pricey, Barolo.”Jonathan Ray - The Spectator
“Garesio Langhe Nebbiolo 2020, Italy, is beautifully elegant, with fine tannins and graceful notes of wild rose. It improves overnight. ”Victoria Moore, The Telegraph - Feb 2024
“Lively red cherries and wild strawberry commingle with hints of loam on the nose, the palate quite tart in the mouth, racy acidity with a brisk and lively finish that ably handled with the potent flavors on the plate. It exuded joie-de-vivre and adored it from the start until turning the bottle upside down to eke out the final drops.”
