Tasting Notes

Tasting this for the first time, frankly left us with a facial expression, to quote Sir Edmund Blackadder, 'like guppy fish at feeding time'. You shouldn't really be making wines this accomplished the first time round. It's indecent. It confuses people. It upsets the idea we have that making great wine takes time and perseverance through trial and error. These are stone-cold classic South African wines from the very off. How has he done it?

More Info

However he's managed it, Franco's Lourens Family Wines are inevitably set to join the likes of Chris Alheit, Eben Sadie, Adi Badenhorst, Duncan Savage et alia in the shimmering constellation of New Wave South African stars. BUT - and here's the rub - since Franco is still relatively unknown, the prices do not yet reflect how sensational the wines really are. So this is a perfect opportunity for Swigger's to bag a rare fine wine bargain!

FROM THE PRESS

“46% Grenache, 27% Cinsault and 27% Syrah, grapes sourced entirely from Swartland, the portion of Wellington Carignan that marked previous vintages no longer a feature. Approximately 80% whole-bunch fermentation. Complex aromatics of red and black fruit, rose, fynbos, olive, earth and spice. The palate has good fruit weight (despite a modest alcohol of 13%) to go with bright acidity and crunchy tannins. It’s a very measured wine – approachable without sacrificing character. 95/100”
