Tasting Notes

The Wanderlust project allows Craig Wessels to flex his creative muscles – the wine changes every year. The release fom vintage 2019 is highly expressive. It began as an exploration of cool climate texture, via a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Pinotage, and has resulted in not only a unique and thought provoking wine, but also a serious and delicious wine that reminds one that undiscovered potential in terroir and cultivar still exists in South Africa.

More Info

Restless River is a rising star which has quietly achieved cult-status for its brilliant, Burgundian-style Chardonnay and lean Cabernet Sauvignon. The Restless River label was launched in 2012 and is managed and owned by Craig and Anne Wessels, winemaker and manager respectively. Their farm is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and has some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines in the region (planted in 1998). Almost all their production is done by hand, resulting in limited quantities of each wine.

“'A 50:50 blend of Pinotage and Pinot Noir. A fynbos top note before macerated cherries and an earthy note. The palate has a sweet ‘n sour quality while the tannins are particularly grippy. Intriguing if a bit rustic.' – , 90/100”
Christian Eedes Wine Mag
“The 2019 Wanderlust comes from a field blend of varieties in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde valley. It is quite closed on the nose, coming across tight and laconic at the moment, and offering light blackberry and briary aromas and a touch of boysenberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly granular texture and a fine bead of acidity, but quite strict and almost Médoc-like toward the finish”
