The 2017 Family White is a blend of 32% Chenin Blanc, 19% Roussanne, 12% each of Grenache Blanc and Verdelho, 8% Viognier, 7% Grenache Gris, 6% Grenache and 4% Clairette Blanche. Yup, Grenache in all three colours! This is so impressive. Immediate sense of powerful mineral core enveloped in citruses, nectarine, apricot and mellow floral notes, with buttercream and elegant whispers of vanilla. Lots packed in there. No overt oak, some vibrant herbaceous hints. Texturally indulgent yet fresh and mouthwatering. Great for rich foods, the balance is impeccable.
We firmly believe that Adi Badenhorst is the most exciting winemaker in South Africa. He is also the most frustrating. His laid back, self-deprecating, playful manner keeps you guessing and makes you wonder whether he has any idea what he is actually doing, whether he just chucks some grapes into a vat and hopes for the best, but we know full well that there is a huge amount of expertise that goes on behind closed doors, when no one is around to witness his skill and diligence ...and spoil his reputation!
FROM THE PRESS
“The white blend from Swartland producer Adi Badenhorst is always a complicated affair, the 2017 consisting of 32% Chenin Blanc, 19% Roussanne, 12% each of Grenache Blanc and Verdelho, 8% Viognier, 7% Grenache Gris, 6% Grenache and 4% Clairette Blanche. Yes, all three variations of Grenache and Marsanne, Semillon and Colombar that featured in the 2016 vintage, these replaced by Verdelho and Clairette Blanche in addition to that dash of Grenache Noir! It hangs together really well, the nose complex and elusive with notes of potpourri, citrus, stone fruit, earth, some nuttiness and spice while the palate is dense and textured yet not without verve. Layers and layers of flavour, the overall impression distinctly savoury, it demands your attention.”Winemag.co.za
