Described as one of Spain’s true first growths, yet flying under the radar for many. Old school Rioja from a legendary producer. Pure silk on the palate. Stewed strawberries and sour cherries and antique rosewood bookcases. Hints of tobacco, balsamic and dried mushroom, sweet currants and dried cranberries. The old American barrels have left an echo of toasty, dusty vanilla and wood spice. (97 points, Tim Atkin MW)
Lopez de Heredia wines are vibrant yet layered when drunk in their youth and will continue to develop and remain pure for many years. This is down to López de Heredia staying true to their techniques and philosophies for over 140 years. Given their promise of year-on-year quality and increasing reputation, Tondonia prices have also resisted the ever increasing inflation in the wine world. Rarely can age worthy wine of this quality be found at this price.
FROM THE PRESS
“Tondonia's reds have been on an upward curve recently and are now at the same level as the bodega's world-class whites. This is a fine, elegant, savoury, low-alcohol blend of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Mazuelo and Graciano, combining summer berry fruit, racy acidity, granular tannins and an earthy, balsamic undertone. Good now, but this will develop further in bottle. 2020-28”97 pts, Tim Atkin MW
