Tasting Notes
The ultimate Constantia Sauvignon Blanc, with super fine aromatics - grapefruit, both fresh and old school grilled, a tease of smoke, cape gooseberry, delicate seasoning, gooseberry and blackcurrant. Electric verve and energy and so full of life, and very very long in the mouth. The flavours float in the mouth with more gorgeous gooseberry notes, and nettle too, but certainly doesn't overpower like some Sauvignons can. It is sensational for the price, and reminds us of the buzz we got from Steenberg Reserve when it was on song, when we used to ship it 16 years ago. Drink with grilled sardines with a generous squeeze of lemon, fresh cheeses, fish and chips, salads, or sip on its own.
More Info
On any trip to South Africa, Buitenverwachting is almost always our first port of call on landing. It is the most wonderful place to sit and taste outside, and enjoy some fine food, with the ever-genial owner and host Lars Maack close by, aided by the brilliant Brad Paton, their highly talented winemaker. Buitenverwachting is a historic Constantia estate, with the name meaning “Beyond Expectation." It originally formed part of the Constantia estate which was founded by Simon Van De Stel, the first Governor of the New Dutch Colony of The Cape, who we know planted vines on his farm.
