So very briar-y and brambley, with such piquancy, and tang - think the finest French creme fraiche with macerated yellow peppers, struck flint, tangerine and just a little tree bark and medicinal herbs. The weight is lovely - not quite that waxy lanolin character that Semillon takes on with age, but certainly on the path. It finishes with the merest hint of bitter pithiness, orange peel and some bruised rosemary. This is such a superb example of the ageing potential of Semillon. Only Jolette's second release, I'm your Huckleberry incorporates skin contact and whole bunches in the fermentation, but is a very mild version without too much grip.

#Tasting#

From the Platter Guide's Newcomer of the Year 2022, The Vineyard party is one of South Africa's most exciting new micro-producers! One day, a woman wanted to buy a wine – “Anything but Shiraz,” she told him. Pieter shrugged and sold her the unlabelled Shiraz, neglecting to mention the variety. A few weeks later she returned demanding more, saying it was the best thing she’d ever drunk. For Pieter, it was a lesson on the gap between what people think they like (or dislike) and what they actually like (or dislike). After that, he decided not to list the varieties on his labels. Every one of Pieter’s wines is a story, rather than a grape variety, and it’s the juice inside the bottle which reveals that story.

Such a joy to sip on with honey warmth, crème caramel, luscious stone fruits and neatly wrapped up with fresh acidity and a long elegant finish.
