Originally intended as a place to breed horses and a family retreat. Wine-loving f\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eriends came to visit and pointed out Sassicaia’s original vineyard, under the castle, that you see when you look over your right shoulder, and then a bit to the left of that, the Masseto vineyard. So they started to plant vines in 2000, and since 2012, the young Ambrogio Cremona Ratti who inherited the domain has been at the helm. They are what's known as an independent grower, based 15km west of Epernay. They have brilliant grand cru and 1er sites in Mesnil, where they grow Chardonnay and farm organically. It's also home to a couple of Champagne's most famous cuvees like Krug Le Mesnil and Salon Mesnil. In the Marne they have a site regarded as one of the best for Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Collard-Picard age this Champagne in wood, which is very unusual, and harks back to the more traditional way of making great Champagne in the past. I put it right up there at the top of any white wine blend in the world.  It is not only wonderful wine, it's surely one of the best value wines out there. It makes you think it's going to be a good mineral experience on the palate, and it is, but then you start notice the apple, lemon, and hint of high quality butter, and a touch of toasted almonds. It's got plenty of body, but its tautly textured, with a nice waxy, juicy, grippy finish. Superb! It's hard to stop drinking this. It's also only 12% alc. which is a big tick. Now it is wholeagain, under the control of brothers Serge and Marc Coulet, the scions of a family that has owned the estate since the 18th century. After WW1, this was the only vinegrowing family to continue making its own wine. The rest went to the cooperative. This means that Brunet are, in a sense, the oldest independent winery in the Terrasses du Larzac. And what wines they are. Boasting 1,000 years of history (they are mentioned in manuscripts dating back to the 9th century CE), Château de Messey is located just outside Tournus on a hilltop 300-400 metres above sea level and surrounded by woods. Owner Marc Dumont purchased the chateau complete with ancient vaulted cellars and 89ha of vines in the early '90s and the quality has sky-rocketed in the last few years. The estate is run by Fredereic Servais, named Winemaker of the Year in 2017 by Appelation Bourgogne for his work at Clos des Poncetys. The character is deeper and more complex than most Macon, and in fact, this is an hour to the North of Macon. The palate is pure, fruity and elegant, although with a savoury element, too. It holds really well in the bottle once opened. Certainly for a few days. It's completely ready to drink on day one, but opens up and gets a bit better on day two, and then holds well for a few days. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e#Tasting#\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSometimes you taste a good wine, decide to buy it – and that’s that. And sometimes, well, sometimes you change flights, rent a car, cancel several meetings, and get lost in the hills of Valpolicella in order to taste some wines that you just have a feeling about. Robin’s instinctive pursuit of Nicola’s wines was an adventure in itself - and one that was entirely worth it. Formerly an assistant to the legendary Valpolicella producer Giusseppe Quintarelli, Nicola Ferrari now makes (far too little of) his own wine from 3ha of organically farmed vines in Fumane. Production is very small, and we often hit the limits of our allocation far earlier than we’d like. Nicola’s Valpols and Amarones remind us of the very great wines of this region’s past. This is cool climate, cool plots and old, unique soils. Even the wineries imagery, using the rare ‘fynbos’ mountain rose as their labelling, shows the affinity for this special spot in South Africa. Style wise, winemaker PJ Geyer is certainly inspired by old-world styling. The deliberate placement of the plots is focused around retaining structure, acidity and gaining minerality in the wines. Very quickly, Thamnus is charming and bewildering highly regarded critics who follow SA closely. Crucially, the vineyards are in the Salnes Valley, influenced by the large saline estuary of Ria de Arousa and the weather of the Atlantic ocean. The calcareous soils of their land is certainly evident.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e#Tasting#\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLocated in the rolling hills of Ancona in the Marche, on the eastern coast of Italy, La Calcinara is headed up by the high-spirited and talented Berluti siblings, Paolo and Eleonora.  Even spending just 5 minutes with them, their energy, enthusiasm and love of wine is infectious. Along with that would come stipulations such as how long the wine must be aged in wood and how many years it must be kept before release.
