Both Olivier and Caroline are from eminent Champagne families, and Olivier's grandfather Rene was a pioneer of organic farming in the region. They are what's known as an independent grower, based 15km west of Epernay. They have brilliant grand cru and 1er sites in Mesnil, where they grow Chardonnay and farm organically. It's also home to a couple of Champagne's most famous cuvees like Krug Le Mesnil and Salon Mesnil. In the Marne they have a site regarded as one of the best for Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Collard-Picard age this Champagne in wood, which is very unusual, and harks back to the more traditional way of making great Champagne in the past. The wine is from Flint Vineyard in Norfolk, with grapes from Crouch Valley and Kent. If this was from France, Spain, Portugal, California or South Africa, I'd still be raving about it. I put it right up there at the top of any white wine blend in the world.  It is not only wonderful wine, it's surely one of the best value wines out there. It makes you think it's going to be a good mineral experience on the palate, and it is, but then you start notice the apple, lemon, and hint of high quality butter, and a touch of toasted almonds. It's got plenty of body, but its tautly textured, with a nice waxy, juicy, grippy finish. Superb! It's hard to stop drinking this. It's also only 12% alc. which is a big tick. These are like fine, restrained Burgundies, that at first nosing and taste, you could miss, but give them the time they need, and they are glorious, with the classical Serralunga terroir nose of roses and minerals. Sharing vineyards with Giacomo Conterno and Altare, their cellar is located between their two cru sites, Ceretta and Gianetto. They farm organically, but as the sites both border non-organic neighbouring vineyards, they do not declare it. A farmer, producer and historian all in one, he’s dedicated a huge portion of his life to exploring, identifying and preserving old varieties and clones, and has successfully identified a whopping 200+ old clones of Palomino Fino and Palomino Jerez and revived and re-planted over 20 grape varieties on the brink of extinction. As well as his projects in Jerez, Alberto also makes wine from extraordinary sites in Yecla, Rioja and as we have here, Valdeorras. \u003c\/span\u003e Valdeorras enjoys a unique climate—warmer than its western neighbors, protected by mountains from Atlantic winds, yet cooler than Bierzo to the east, shielded from hot Continental air. Winemaker Alberto Orte crafts A Portela Blanco from a single vineyard at high elevation, planted in slate and granite soils.
