Bertrand keeps meeting people who collect wine who say he should charge 2 or 3 times more the price. He’s retired from that now and concentrates solely on his own wine, Chateau Cherubin that comes from a very special 2.5 hectares of old vines which are sandwiched in the vineyards of Chateau Angelus. One day, a woman wanted to buy a wine – “Anything but Shiraz,” she told him. Pieter shrugged and sold her the unlabelled Shiraz, neglecting to mention the variety. A few weeks later she returned demanding more, saying it was the best thing she’d ever drunk. For Pieter, it was a lesson on the gap between what people think they like (or dislike) and what they actually like (or dislike). After that, he decided not to list the varieties on his labels. Every one of Pieter’s wines is a story, rather than a grape variety, and it’s the juice inside the bottle which reveals that story. He doesn’t own any vines, but instead scours South Africa’s winelands for top-quality fruit that has somehow slipped under the radar, now sourcing from nearly 70 sites. Some years he’ll make 20 wines, other years 35. With the benefit of anonymity, variety and regional identity take a back seat while parcel expression does the driving. It's also home to a couple of Champagne's most famous cuvees like Krug Le Mesnil and Salon Mesnil. In the Marne they have a site regarded as one of the best for Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Our colleague Kate Robinson told us to try Champagne Moutardier, a Champagne she used to enjoy selling for another merchant that no longer takes it. We got samples in and, wow! I thrust a glass into my wife's hand, as I couldn't believe how delicious it was.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI met the brothers Wiliam and Simon in France in February, as it all seemed too good to be true. But the wine tasted just as good there. I dug a bit deeper and it turns out they're a serial recipient of the 'Coup de Coeur' for best Champagne of its type in their region. At the time the boundary was set, no one thought someone would plant above the woods on the next hillside over from Sassicaia, but actually above Gaja's Bolgheri property, Ca' Marcanda. But they did. Originally intended as a place to breed horses and a family retreat. Wine-loving f\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eriends came to visit and pointed out Sassicaia’s original vineyard, under the castle, that you see when you look over your right shoulder, and then a bit to the left of that, the Masseto vineyard. So they started to plant vines in 2000, and since 2012, the young Ambrogio Cremona Ratti who inherited the domain has been at the helm. The architect of the neo-classical style of Barolo focusing on wines with real finesse: silky, elegant, perfumed, fine fruit, with gentler tannins, less wood and extraction, \u003cspan class=\"il\"\u003eColombo\u003c\/span\u003e is the guy that everyone wants advice from. He won the Gambelli award for best young winemaker in Italy, and he works alongside a winemaker who is a consultant in Barbaresco, who makes the wine at esteemed Bruno Giacosa. They taste together, and talk together. The point is here is, that anything exciting happening in Barolo and Barbaresco, Gian Luca is probably aware of, and likely to be involved with. A few weeks later she returned demanding more, saying it was the best thing she’d ever drunk. For Pieter, it was a lesson on the gap between what people think they like (or dislike) and what they actually like (or dislike). After that, he decided not to list the varieties on his labels. Every one of Pieter’s wines is a story, rather than a grape variety, and it’s the juice inside the bottle which reveals that story.
