Tasting Notes

Good godfathers this is a lovely chardonnay. Reminds us more of Burgundy than South Africa.  Beeswax, honeycomb, oaty biscuits and  luminous fruit - sunripened melon and peach, lime curd and blossom. Gorgeous fine texture, a hint of mealy yestiness and fine, chiseled palate. There's so much more to come from this but right now it's ample, honeyed and has a long, tangy finish. Young, but really fabulous to drink now. Fruit sourced from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, and ageing in a combination of oak , stainless steel and amphora,

Berene Sauls has probably the most unique story of all of our winemakers. And that's really saying something, we work with some extroardinary people! The small village of Tesselaarsdal in the Overberg, 24km north-east of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is named after East India Company settler Johannes Tesselar. On his death in 1810, he bestowed the land to his freed slaves and owner/winemaker Berene herself is a descendant on one of those very slaves. If you look closely at the label, you can make out two people walking across the mountain. This is Berene and her grandmother.

“This is another accomplished Chardonnay from Tesselaarsdal that boasts a breath and depth of textural opulence making the maiden 2019 vintage look more like a chiselled Premier Cru Chablis in comparison. The 2020 nose boasts classic notes of spicy yellow citrus, green honeydew melon, white peach and a bold limestone mineral vein. The wine coats your mouth with a fine glycerol weight and delicious mouth-watering green apple pastille notes enlivened with pronounced tangy acids. Seamless and harmonious, Berene Sauls has created another attractive expression of premium Chardonnay that is ready to drink on release.”

“The 2020 Chardonnay has a wonderful bouquet, quite backward at first but revealing apple blossom, citrus fruit and touches of nectarine. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, orange peel and yellow plum flavors, and touches of ginger toward the finish, which displays superb depth. Tesselaardal, founded by Berene Sauls in 2015, can add another wine to their list of classy Chardonnays. 93 points. Drink 2021-2023”
