Tasting Notes

Koffer with a bit of age - count me in! This is a 100% Cinsault from one vineyard in the Breedekloof -  Cinsault has enjoyed a fantastic revival in South Africa, and this is an interesting example. Breezy currants and briar fruits with a little spice - cinnamon, nutmeg and liqurice sticks. That little bit of age has added a lovely sandalwood and nutty finish. Delicious!

More Info

My Koffer translates as my bag, or my suitcase, and this wine is meant to be a suitcase of memories of the good old days, and the what made Pieter fall in love with wine. Pieter's love affair with Cinsault which started many years ago, when he was in hisfirst winemaking job at Eersterivier Wine Cellar. Producing large (when we say large, we mean the real deal, hundreds of thousands of litres) of a particular wine called Tassenberg, it's no real surprise that a fair lot of drinking of it went on as well. Withall that time drinking, Pieter noticed a very particular flavour component that he adored- a very particular fresh strawberry fragrance. Nothing confected, nothing like strawberry jam, but more like the smell when you get walking through ripe strawberry fields - something fresh, wholesome, with the slightest green tinge. A fascination started with Cinsault and for years, he dreamt of producing one in homage to the great 'Tassie.' Years of searching for just the right vineyard proved fruitless (literally) until finally, someone told him about this little vineyard in the Breedekloof. The fruit was formally sold to a big co-op and blended with other Cinsault grapes, so he took the plunge and bought some grapes. The first My Koffer was produced in 2011, and this is the third vintage since then. The greatest level of care has been taken in producing this - being naturally quite a high yielding grape, meticulous selection was made both picking in the vineyard and then on the sorting table. As Pieter says, the grapes that made it in to this wine were of grade A export quality table grapes - perhaps even good enough for Waitrose!
