Tasting Notes
Gorgeous balance on the nose with creamy lemon mousse, quince and leesy notes balanced by salty freshness. Rich and textured, and so well-balanced and long with gritty, rocky backbone and fantastic acidity. This is 100% Albilla de Manchuela, a rare indigenous variety distinct from other Albillos grown across Spain that retains excellent freshness in a warm place like Manchuela. Reto, which translates from Spanish as challenge, refers to the difficulty of making a high quality white wine in a warm area! And Juan Antonio has nailed it.
More Info
After some years working for Spanish winemaking giant Telmo Rodrigues, Juan Antonio spent time in France learning about biodynamics and how he could apply those techniques to his own vineyards in the heart of Spain in Manchuela. His vineyards are at high elevation and sit on a combination of clay, limestone and sandstone soils, with vines ranging between 30 and 90 years old, with all sites worked biodynamically. His deft touch and talent for creating terroir specific, honest wines has been noticed by the great and good in the wine trade, with Luis Gutiérrez a particular fan.
