Once upon a time, in a land far, far away the Swig team used to attend magical events we liked to call wine tastings. Rooms packed full of strangers standing shoulder to shoulder sloshing and spitting wine around and nattering endlessly about minerality and terroir. Tucked in the corner at one such auspicious event was a hidden gem, a Sicilian red whose elegance and depth stopped us in our tracks. Back at Swig HQ we had a google and were pleasantly surprised to see that the king of Italian wine himself (Ian d’Agata) describes our top shelf find as ‘rank(ing) alongside Italy’s best reds’. We couldn’t agree more! In fact we’d go as far as to say that the stunning Feudo Montoni Vigna Lagnusa is hands down the best value Sicilian (possibly even Italian) red that we’ve ever had the pleasure to taste.
In Sicilian ‘lagnusa’ means lazy referring to the tiny yields these 35 year old vines produce from their 600m perch. This high altitude and low production means you get beautifully concentrated fruit with depth and intensity without the wine being flabby or jammy – weighing in at just 13.5% this is a world away from those 15% Nero d’Avola’s that give such intense holiday hangovers. It’s that clever balance and brilliant winemaking from the families 200 years of experience farming these lands that make this truly special.
FROM THE PRESS
“Lagnusa is a bright, fruity Nero d’Avola that always exhibits the variety’s perfumed, bright violet quality, with ripe but fresh, vibrant black and red fruit aromas and flavors complicated by minty herbs and spices. Lagnusa is all about pure and precise Nero d’Avola fruit, with no camouflaging oak or vanilla nuances at all. ”Ian d’Agata, Vinous.com
