Another beautiful Bordeaux, so pure and with good concentration and lovely left bank, Medoc notes of fine berry, and hints of graphite. This is also excellent value. The wine comes from 2 parcels close to each other in the Verdignan sector of St Seurin de Cadourne, just 3km north of St Estephe. The parcels are on classic gravel soils, facing the estuary. The best known neighbour is the excellent Sociando Mallet. 85% Cabernet and 15% Merlot. This is also a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon compared to what most producers are now doing in the area. Drink now or cellar for 6 to 12 years.
A Master of Wine friend and former colleague, who has lived for in Bordeaux for 20 years, sent me an excited email about a special producer he’d come across that he thought I really must taste. Samples arrived, and yes, this is a super special find! When consider the price of its most famous neighbours, this is phenomenally well priced! There are actually two excellent wines from this producer, Dompierre. The Pauillac comes from 2.3 hectares of vines in the St Lambert sector of Pauillac. This puts them at less than 1km from the Chateau Latour winery buildings and directly contiguous to those of Latour, Pichon-Lalande, Pichon-Baron and Lynch-Bages.
