Tasting Notes

“Elite-level Priorat usually comes with a price tag as steep as the hills it’s grown on. You’d be hard-pressed to find any other example at this price capturing this much depth, mystery, and fascination.” Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier This was my highlight of a tasting on a hot June afternoon, and having read up on i the next day, I immediately secured every bottle I could. I loved it for its brightness and incredible intensity and precision to the fruit, at a modest 13.5%. It’s a very fine expression of the classic licorella soils here, in the heart of Gratallops. Owner Jose Luis told me he considers 2018 a turning point in the quality and poise of their wines. The Wine Advocate review said drink now-2029. I would say a lot longer – more like 2035.

More Info

Mas Martinet is one of Priorat's top wineries, established in 1981 by Jose Luís Pérez Ovejero. He was one of René Barbier of Clos Mogador fame’s original Priorat crew along with Alvaro Palacios. Clos Martinet is their flagship cuvee, produced from mostly Garnacha with a handful of other varieties.

FROM THE PRESS

“The flagship 2018 Clos Martinet is the wine that started it all and is still a blend of Garnacha (Tinta and Peluda), Syrah, Cariñena, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Monastrell as it was since the beginning but now with a restrained 13.5% alcohol and higher acidity. Clos Martinet is a single five-hectare terraced vineyard planted with clonal material in 1986 on decomposed llicorella slate, iron and big rocks in the soil. The wine is subtle and a bit shy, insinuating rather than in your face. There is a lot less ripeness than in the past. It's medium-bodied and fluid, fresh and balanced. 96 points. Drink 2021-2029.”
