Tasting Notes
From a vineyard planted in 2000 on their own property Roundstone, just outside Riebeek Kasteel, the Schist Syrah was the one that most impressed us of their single terroir wines this vintage. Very striking - black olive, a tease of smoke, raspberry coulis and raspberry leaf and grilled meats. Highly concentrated, with a savoury-meaty palate, fine-grained tannins and long finish. This will certainly go the distance for cellaring - 15 years +.
More Info
Founding members of the Swartland Revolution, four times winner Platter Guide Winery of the Year, and The Wine Enthusiast's Winemaker of the Year 2016, Chris and Andrea Mullineux are one serious power couple. Based just outside of Riebeek Kasteel on their farm Roundstone, their ambition is bottle wines that are a true expression of the Swartland. Its granite, schist and iron soils, its wind swept sites, old vines, hot climate and long, dry Summers. With Chris in charge of the vineyards and viticulture, and Andrea at the helm in the cellar, it has been a joy to see the incredible quality coming out of the estate year on year. Are there any more talented duos in South Africa? I don't think anyone would question it.
