Dried raisins and blackcurrants on the nose are joined by blackcurrant jam, fresh dark fruits, a hint of perfumed thyme and a waft of pine. On the palate the fruit is fresh and crunchy, with the muscat evident in the flavour of macerated raisins. This is a super concentrated mix lifted by layers of spice and fresh fruit.
Planted in 1890, the Evangelho Vineyard is truly remarkable! The 125 year old vines are planted on their own roots on unirrigated sand banks made up of granite and quartz that reach 40 foot deep. All of this does come at a price, namely very low yields, meaning that only 120 cases have been produced. The vineyard is not an entirely hidden secret having been used for top quality wines by Bonny Doon, Neyers, Hess, Bedrock and Turley - some of the biggest names in the region. It is also, rather fabulously, wedged between a Burger King and a motel that rents rooms by the hour - who said there wasn't any glamour in winemaking!
