Tasting Notes

Honeyed apricots, hint of toast, passionfruit and flakes of toasted coconut. It is still so young, and with phenomenal acid line and frame and a weight to the palate that hints at richness to come with more years in bottle. Robin: I drank a bottle of the spectacular and very convincing 2015 Quintaine at a restaurant in Tournon, overlooking Hermitage, with our lovely winemaking friend Aymeric Paillard, of La Vignes des Peres. It's so rare to get a wine that’s already nicely mature but still has plenty of life in it. We enjoyed it develop over the course of the evening, until the chef finally had to turf us out, and we sipped the final drop from the bottle.

Robin: There are only a few times in my life that I can recall having been moved and quite so excited when meeting a winemaker and tasting their wines for the first time. The wines of Guillemot-Michel age like very few white Burgundies. Jasper Morris MW reports in his reviews of Burgundy that following a tasting of 30 vintages of 'Quintaine' from Domaine Guillemot-Michel, that the 1999 and 2001 still taste very young! Morris sums up:" These are brilliant wines which work in so many different styles – refined, pure, complex, lush and botrytis-affected. This is what Viré-Clessé can offer, especially at the Clessé end and particularly Quintaine, when in the hands of master practitioners such as the Guillemot-Michel family, pioneers of biodynamics in the region. Congratulations to both generations – Pierrette and Marc, Sophie and Gautier. The domaine continues in excellent hands."

“"Very pale colour but this is quite delicious in its concentration of youthful fruit. Way to go! Rich white apple fruit, no sign of botrytis. How this swells on the palate, sucrosity yes, sugar no, with wonderful class and length. Yes, you can drink now but so much more will happen over the next 15-20 years. Tasted: October 2021" ”
